Why Global Peer Support Day Matters: Supporting Peer Support in North Dakota
Global Peer Support Day is an opportunity to recognize the people who make peer support possible every day: peer support specialists and the communities they serve.
Across North Dakota, peer support specialists bring something unique to the behavioral health continuum. Grounded in lived experience, mutuality, connection, hope, and recovery, peer support offers a perspective that complements clinical treatment and other behavioral health services.
At the Peer Support Alliance of North Dakota (PSAND), we believe peer support has an important and distinct role in behavioral health—and that the future of the peer profession is something we can shape together.
Why Global Peer Support Day Matters
Global Peer Support Day celebrates the contributions of peer support specialists and the impact of peer support in communities around the world.
For people who have experienced mental health or substance use challenges, brain injury, navigating systems and finding a path forward can sometimes feel overwhelming. Connecting with someone who has lived through similar experiences can offer something different: understanding without judgment, connection through shared experience, and hope that recovery is possible.
Peer support specialists use their own lived experience to support others while encouraging self-determination, recovery, connection, and growth.
Today is a chance to recognize the people doing this important work and the value peer support brings to individuals, organizations, communities, and behavioral health systems across North Dakota.
Peer Support Has a Unique Role
Peer support is not simply another behavioral health service.
Peer support specialists bring the perspective of lived experience into the continuum of care in a way that complements clinical treatment and other services.
They bring connection, hope, mutuality, recovery, and the powerful understanding that comes from having walked a similar path.
As behavioral health services continue to evolve in North Dakota, it is important that peer support maintains a strong and distinct place within that continuum.
PSAND is working to help make sure it does.
Through education, professional development, connection, advocacy, leadership opportunities, and collaboration, PSAND works to strengthen the peer profession and support the people doing this work across the state.
Shaping the Future of Peer Support Together
The future of peer support should not be shaped by one organization or one system.
It should be shaped together.
Peers bring the voice of lived experience. Employers bring the perspective of organizations putting peer support into practice. Community partners and advocates bring additional knowledge, resources, relationships, and opportunities.
PSAND helps bring those voices together.
We create opportunities for peers and partners to connect, learn from one another, identify challenges and opportunities, and collectively strengthen the direction of peer support in North Dakota.
We aren't just supporting the peer profession as it exists today. Together, we're helping shape what comes next.
Who Supports the People Providing Peer Support?
Peer support specialists show up for others every day.
Who shows up for them?
PSAND does.
We bring peers together to learn, connect, grow, lead, advocate, and strengthen their profession. We work to create opportunities for professional development, meaningful connection, leadership, and collaboration across North Dakota.
Supporting peer support specialists means supporting the people who are helping others find connection, hope, and a path forward.
And that work takes a community.
